Shopping online. Everyone’s doing it! December 5th, 2007.

Online shoppers will spend £15 billion during December on gifts and food, this takes the total for online sales in 2007 to £46 billion – a massive £16 billion increase on last year. So what are the reasons for the record spending online?

Why the internet shopping boom?

One reason is consumers are increasingly becoming comfortable with finding their way around the internet, search engines have become part of everyday life. Retailers are now devoting more effort to their online stores making it easier and more secure to buy online. As well as the new confidence in website security, the increase in competition has lured shoppers to the internet all hoping to find that bargin.

Who is buying what online?

Research by Deloitte suggests that 44% of people will buy at least one present over the internet. Men are more likely to shop online than women and more than half of 16-44 year-olds would buy a gifts online, compared with 15% of pensioners.
